What people are saying about the Colby Center for Dance:
Hi Miss Jen,
Thank you so much for the kind words! I would be happy to come in during that week. Let me know what times you were thinking and I will let you know which one I can make. I know Gaby is so happy when she is at the studio and that means the world to us. She takes to heart all that you tell her and she respects you so much. Your artistic talent and dance knowledge/experience is so impressive, I am in awe every year with your creations and how well you prepare our dancers. I love too that this year you have focused strongly on positivity. I feel that is so important and I realize in the dance world how hard this can be to achieve. I can assure you I will continue to reinforce this with Gaby at home and with all the families I talk to! So nice to hear such nice words. I have only had great experiences with the dancers and families and couldn't imagine being any other way. We keep a busy schedule in our house but I hope you know you can always asking me for anything and I will do all I can to help!
Thanks so much and best of luck this weekend! (I know it has been a trying few weeks but the girls and boy will shine b/c of yours and theirs hard work!) I am sooo excited :-)

Lauren had a wonderful first class. She keeps talking about her experience exclaiming it was the "best day ever!" Many thanks to you, your mom and her teacher for making Lauren's day extra-special.
We look forward to next Tuesday -

I wanted to send this to you today because it's one of those things that will just simply slip my mind as the days go on. Both of my kids came home today telling me how much they enjoyed you teaching ballet today. They both said it was such a great day and felt like they really learned so much. It's just makes my heart feel good to hear this and I wanted you to know just how much you teaching them, means to them.

Being a JCD has meant more to me than I can really express at this point in my life. Having spent only one year as JCD and most of another being a partial JCD, I still believe it has helped me grow into the human being God has intended me to be. I have learned so many things about myself and about some amazing people. I am truly thankful for all the special relationships I have made. With all of the many, many hours we have spent together each week, it's no surprise we have grown to be such close friends. I know I will never laugh so much as I did this past year.I am so thankful that all of the JCDs accepted me into their lives and friendships so willingly. It meant and means more to me than I can say. I know I will never meet such wonderful people in all my life.

Hi miss Jen! I just wanted to tell you happy thanksgiving and I hope everything is going well. I'm so thankful for everything you and the studio has given me. The program has been crazy but really fun and there has been so many times someone has said something and it reminds me of something you've said or told us. I miss you and the studio and hope all is well:)

I wanted to tell you what a great Kickoff it was today. Since Jenna was a Jr. JCD, the Kickoff has always been my favorite event. I love to see all of the dances for the first time and to see all of the unique costumes. To me, the Kickoff is always so exciting because is it a day of “firsts”, but also a great way to work the kinks out and see how the dances and costumes are working on the stage.
I think you totally outdid yourself this year! The costumes were all so beautiful; each one seemed prettier than the next--especially the senior solo costumes. All of the dances we saw today were fun to watch and the girls really looked like they were having fun with their performances. I also loved seeing many of the “old” dances brought back. From the ones I have seen in the past, I think you were able to improve on each of them and make them even more enjoyable to watch.
Thank you for all of your hard work in putting this season together. To dedication to our girls (and boy) really shows especially on a day like today! I can see why the three judges had such a hard time picking their favorites; there were so many great ones to choose from!
Great job to you and your staff

Every year there will be one or two people who just don't understand what you have accomplished building such a great team and how much being part of it benefits each dancer. Eventually, they see the light or they leave. Just remember there are dozens of us who are back every year for every one or two who isn't.

Thank you for a phenomenal show yesterday! Thank you for all of the hard work you put into every little detail, it really showed. Pressley loved every minute, as you can tell from her beaming smile on stage ;) Thank you to the entire staff as I know it is a team effort. Well done team Colby!
Congrats on a wonderful dance season!!!

Just wanted to say thank you for all you’ve done for us and Maddie this year. It has been an amazing first year as a JCD for Maddie and we had such a great time at Nationals. Thought I’d send you this pic of Sara… she came up with this pose herself. She really enjoyed the week, too. Thank you for letting her hang out with the girls in the dressing room… I hope that she wasn’t in the way. I hope you’d let us know if she was… :)
We are excited about next year and are just so thrilled to be a part of what you have created. We are PROUD to be part of the JCD family!!

Once again you have outdone yourself with the team. We, in no way, after all the ups and downs this year thought that the team would look so polished and clean in their performances. We were blown away by the dances this year (as we usually are) and the choreography was awesome! We mainly wanted to write though...to thank you for what we see in Brittany this year. She has grown each and every year under your amazing tutelage but this year she has gained something that beats out all the technique you (and your staff) have taught her and that is the confidence and personality that we (and others) saw in her this year. She is so comfortable on that stage and that is a huge difference from years past. So, from the bottom of our hearts we thank you and wish that we had the words to express to you the worth of what you pass on to these kids on a daily basis.

Just wanted to send you a quick note.....
You have helped Taylor achieve her dream! You have given her the very best training. She was a professional dancer last night. No matter what happens, I truly know you have given her every tool she is going to need to make it in the real dance world. Thank you.

I can think of a million reasons why it was great to be a part of the JCD team. As a teenager, it gave me something positive and active to be involved in, it taught me about working hard as a team to accomplish goals, it created a “home away from home”, and my teammates were more like family than just friends. Today, what stands out most, is how much being a JCD helped me become a successful professional dancer. I credit a lot of my success to participating in dance competitions, and we sure won lots of big awards! But what we learned as JCDs was how to be great all-around dancers and how to act in a good professional way, not how to win a trophy by doing the same dance over and over until it is perfect like some places do. If there is a secret to my success, it was watching dancers from other good studios hour after hour at each competition. Competing also brought so many opportunities to make friends with people from around the country. In the last two years, I have traveled across the world only to take the stage with the same people who were my competitors or were judging our performances. The connections amaze me - and it is so nice to see a familiar face in places you are expecting not to know a soul. And best of all? We all remember each other but no one EVER remembers who won what! Many performers I have met have heard of the JCDs – and what sticks in their minds is: “what a nice group of kids”, or “they have SUCH great costumes”, or “very professional,” or my personal favorite “aren’t you the girl who fell in the middle of a tap dance at IDC Nationals? Your studio is so awesome!” What matters is the friends you make, the impressions you leave, and the things you learn to better yourself as a dancer, as well as a person. That’s why it was so great to be a JCD. I learned these important lessons, and I would not be able to call myself a professional dancer today if I did not have such a wonderful team of dancers and teachers to make my years on the team such a positive, rewarding experience.

Miss Dance of Florida 2000
There are a million reasons why I was glad to be a JCD; the beautiful hand-made costumes dripping with rhinestones; the ingenious choreography; the endless weekend rehearsals filled with laughter, sweat, sore muscles, goofing off, and inside jokes; the trips to McDonalds to order 120 happy meals in an attempt to collect all 80 Teenie Beanie Babies; the pre-recital madness; getting the acro mats stuck in Miss Jen's car; the road trips; counting down the days until we saw the Canadians at nationals; the "breaking out" of the JCD room; playing in the snow in St. Louis an hour before some of us had to be onstage performing; the rhinestone parties, and the list could go on for 15 or 16 pages. I would have to say though, truly the best part about being a JCD, was knowing that no matter what, I always had a team there for me. We were always there for each other in times of need. Whether it was someone's best friend was mad at him or her, someone needing help studying for finals, someone's parents getting divorced, or you name it, it didn't matter, there were always fourty friends there for you to help anyway they could. And when one of us won something (which happened a lot!), we all won something, and we were always there to celebrate and share in the excitement.

I danced here for 4 years and loved my experience! There are so many different levels of commitment within the studio that there is something for everyone. If you don't dance competitively then there is a performance team to participate in or you can just take classes. You can pick your level of commitment based on what you and your family can handle. With each team there are mandatory things that come with it but those certain things are laid out beforehand and described in detail so you would know what you are signing up for. You were told about the mandatory things several weeks before the deadline to sign up so you could have time to decide if you were going to do it or not. I danced competitively for one year and loved it but couldn't continue on because the commitment at that time was too big for my family. I did the performance team all four years and loved it! Would recommend this studio!!

I am so happy with my families experience with this studio. Ms. Jen is great, she provides the girls with "age appropriate classes, costumes, choreography, music and technique. She provides several levels of escalation for each dancer so that you don't feel pressured to take on more than is appropriate for your daughter or family. Most importantly I really enjoy the other families that I have met that are a part of the studio. The other parents are incredibly supportive of my child and their daughters are as well. This is a competition studio but there is no competition attitude among the girls or parents. They are truly a loving supportive team in every sense of the word.

My daughter danced at the studio and on the team for 7 years. Overall her experience was more than positive. She is currently a junior in college and the benefits of dance are still with her. She has been choreographing for her college team and teaching class. The confindance and discipline she learned in her years at Colby have had a positive effect on her life. She recently interviewed for an internship that is both coveted and competitive and was perfectly poised for the interview. She got the internship. The life of a cpmpetive dance family is not always easy. Choices have to be made. All Mandatory events are made very clear at the start of the season. They were not always convenient, but we made it work. If I had the choice to do this again, I would. My daughter is very focused and organized and flourishing in college and much of this she owes to her experience at Colby Center for Dance.

I was so happy to meet the owner of this dance studio this weekend. My daughter competes with a studio in Cooper City, and we attended the same dance convention. Every time I saw the girls from the Colby studio, they were smiling and working together. We love our studio too, but it just seemed like these Colby dancers have a little something extra. The girls were happy to share space in a crowded dressing room, they ran up with band aids when a child from our team came offstage with a cut, the owner was complimentary of several of our dances, just overall they seem like they work hard to be nice people. You don't get that at competition much. They dance very well and also look dress and act in a classy way that sets them apart. Even one of the judges spoke about that on the mic at an awards presentation. I want to thank the Colby studio for being a good example of sportsmanship and recognizing the importance of bringing more into their training than just great dancing. You taught us a lot as parents, and I know our studio owner had really nice things to say about all of you as well. Congratulations on your wins, and hopefully we will cross paths again.
Colby center for Dance is a second home to me. Miss Jen is my other mom because she always cares for me and helps me become a better person. The girls on or off the team are like little sisters that I've always wanted. Whenever we go to a competition our costumes are done at least a month before and she keeps them for us, we know what time we are supposed to be there, our moms get to cheer for us in the audience as loud as they want to, and we are all excited for what's ahead no matter what happens. Even though our studio is "abnormal" because we don't go to a competition every weekend, we get to perform locally, which to me is more important to make a neighborhood happy than winning a trophy or a dust collector. Winning a trophy is cool and fun but in the long run nobody will walk up to you at your job and say "oh hey. Your the girl who won miss teen dance of Florida 2016". They will know you as the girl who made them smile. This studio has been so nice to me for 10 years. Being one of the older girls doesn't mean that I'm the captain of the team or bossy kid of the studio. It means that I'm one of the oldest sisters and I have to care for the younger ones. I love everyone at the studio and I hope everyone who graduates will leave a legacy of leadership. I love this studio so much and it will always have a place in my heart.

My daughter is in love with dance again because of the Colby Center of Dance. We just moved to the area a year ago where we tried a few studios, and here in CFl we tried two before landing at Colbys. She just couldn't ever get interested in the classes anywhere else, despite dancing nonstop at home. We don't really have an interest in competition dance, but I notice a lot of reviews here are from competition families. I thought that people researching the studio should also know how great their young dance program is. The kids are all engaged in the classes, and the teachers are very encouraging. I see why this place is so respected around the area, and I'm sorry I didn't listen to the word of mouth recommendations I got earlier! Then she'd have had even more time at Colbys, and since she never wants to leave, I think she would also wish so! This is a great place with great people and great values. I wouldn't send people anywhere else.

If you are looking for an amazing dance studio this is it! As a former student I can say I had so much fun, this place gave me strongest technique/performance base any dancer could ever want! Its great for learning what team based success feels like and how dance can be a productive form of self expression! Everything I learned here has carried me through college dance programs, jobs and beyond! I love dance and I owe it all to the Colby studio! Even if you don't live close its worth the commute! my parents did it for years for me, its a great place for all grade school ages, the technique sticks with you and the memories/friends of a lifetime will too!

I just wanted to share with you just how special it was for Danielle to receive the award for 3rd place most improved in jazz last night. I know to some it may not seem like a big award but to Danielle this was huge....perhaps monumental!!...... She did this all with a smile on her face, working harder and harder and never giving up.... even when she wanted to or could have...I witnessed her use that struggle as a chance to get stronger and work even harder. This was the case for her academically and she finished her year VERY SUCCESSFULLY because of her strong work ethic and perseverance.
When you called her name last night, I knew immediately the sheer joy this would bring to her and a strong sense of accomplishment....this little bit of recognition will likely be with her for her entire lifetime....as it demonstrated to her that when she thought no one was looking and noticing her hard at work .....you were...and I can't thank you enough for that..... Danielle set her mind and set a goal to dance and works every day on her stretch, kicks, remembering parts to routines etc... We have all grown accustomed to Danielle dancing her way through the kitchen, dancing when she should be taking her medicine, dancing when she should be getting dressed for school etc... on her own, alone at home when she is doing things at her own pace I can see her hard work paying off. Last night was just the right kind of medicine that none of us expected but certainly want you to know how much it was appreciated....I know you touched the hearts of alot of young ladies and little girls last night but you made a lasting footprint on our hearts and helped reaffirm for Danielle that even when faced with a challenge....hard work, dedication and a positive outlook always is the key to winning...no matter the outcome :)
Have a wonderful summer - we will look forward to dancing with you again in August.
All the best,

I just saw some videos that went viral with 7 and 8 year olds dancing to boyfriends back and single ladies. And it was pretty scary to see such young children dressing and dancing that way. So I wanted to say THANK YOU!!! For always being respect of your young dances and teaching them the stuff that counts. I've said it before and I'll say it again...I'm very lucky that I happened to fall into such a wonderful place for my daughter to grow and learn with people that love her. We are so blessed to have you guys.
I just wanted to say how much we love you. You are so much more than just the costume and cookie lady. You take care of and sometimes help parent our kids for more hours a week than their own parents do. Those kids love and respect you. Grownups tend to get so caught up in their own worlds, they dont think about others. You are always thinking about what is best for our kids. Tomorrow will come and go, just take a deep breathe. And if that doesnt work, get a spray bottle and use jet stream!!!

I just wanted to say thank you for everything you have done for me. You have made me the person i am today and I can't thank you enough. You taught me to be responsible, to have courage, to be proud, and how to face my fears. I really don't know where i would be right now if I hadn't come to you. I really do appreciate everything you did for me, whether it was putting me in things i was nervous about for me to learn or it was putting me in certain classes for me to become a better dancer. You taught me to not be shy, so in classes i would stand in the front, and every now and then i would get picked out and recognized, and thats a good feeling to know that i caught someones eye, but i couldn't do it without you, you taught me everything i know. Thank you for bringing me on trips and other things, NYC two years ago, Miami, last years NYC and Canada. I can't explain how much fun i had on those trips, and they really do help with learning and getting more comfortable. It was such a great honor to be on your team. All of those nice comments we would get from other people about being so neat and together, it was good to know people could see how much work you put into us. Thank you for all the dances you put me in, when it was different styles i needed to get better at or dances that i needed confidence in, you helped me learn how to do it all. I know its a lot of work for you but I really really do thank you for all of it. Once again thank you for making me the confident, strong, and responsible dancer and girl i am today. I love you both and i will miss you guys and the whole teem so much, i hope this year is fun and great. <3 love

I wanted to let you know that we really appreciate all the kind words you said about Meagan. This whole year at dance has been an amazing experience. Your hard work in all you do really shows. I know you have help, but putting the plan into action is the tough part. Your system works and we can tell you put thought into all you do and you have good reasoning for why it is done that way. I am so excited to have Meagan do a solo. Meagan really has enjoyed this year and loves coming to dance. I always said when she was two years old that she loved to dance...Dance and play teacher. What a perfect fit this would be!!!
Thanks again for a great year,

Congratulations on another National Title Winner!! A most well-deserved win. And, congratulations on all of the placing dances and especially on the choreography award! The heart and soul of any dance. Sorry to go on so much on a busy day for you, but I also want to congratulate you as always on the character of this team. Those children/teenagers were absolutely beautiful on the stage, poised, the girls were lady-like and elegant and seemed genuinely, humbly happy to be there... That is only one of the many reasons why we love this team and studio so much. Choreography can be stolen, but goodness, generosity, kindness and character cannot. Thank you for the extraordinary growth Ava has had this year. As much as we loved her beautiful solo and last year, her solo this year was on such a different level it is hard to believe that all happened in one short year. To see her on that stage beaming meant the world to us. Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity that she will literally never forget. You have never seen a child so proud of a yellow t-shirt! NYC is going to go wonderfully for everyone!! We will be saying prayers for all of your safety and a whole lot of favor on a group of very special girls and women. Good luck and have an amazing week and trip!!

From a former JCD now dancing professionally:
Being a JCD absolutely prepared me to be a professional dancer because what we learned as JCDs was how to be great all-around dancers and how to act in a good professional way, not how to win a trophy by doing the same dance over and over until it is perfect like some places do. If there is a secret to my success, it was watching dancers from other good studios hour after hour at each competition. Competing also brought so many opportunities to make friends with people from around the country. In the last four years, I have traveled across the world only to take the stage with the same people who were my competitors or were judging my performances.
I was driving home last night after the recital and I really wanted to send you a note to say how grateful I am to the experience Amaya is receiving at CCD. I totally was prepared to enter into utter chaos because of how much is going on at 1 time with so many kids and few helpers, but I was so amazed at how utterly chaos free it was. I was so very impressed with how the older girls really take the younger girls under their wing and help them, and are so efficient and professional. I want Amaya to grow into her dance and know that when she goes to an audition or whatever that she has to be on her top game, and watching how all the kids were last night just really inspired me. I had so much fun working the dressing room, seriously! The kids are so fun to watch, and doing there make-up (though I might not have done so great) was just a pleasure. Thank you for allowing me to be there....I have always raved about how professional and well-run your studio is......I can just see the skill level Amaya has climbed to in just the year she has been going, and I cant wait to see how far she goes. I am so deeply appreciative of how much you are offering to Amaya. Last night I felt like I got to be backstage at a very prestigious event. I will definetly offer my services to you, even if Amaya is not performing. She was dancing with the other girls and having a blast too. I dont think that "thank you" is quite efficient but I feel that is the least I can do, is let you know that my baby girl eats, sleeps and breaths dance (you see that daily right!?!?!) and to be a part of your school is an honor. I hope that she stays with you until she moves on. You are an awesome person and I pray your business is successful beyond measure! Have a great day!

All the way home on the plane, we talked about how much we loved being at your studio. The kids are so nice and they are some of the hardest working students I've met to this date! They never complained about dancing all those hours and have lots of energy and drive. I like to visit studios that I have judged in competition and see if the kids can really dance and unfortunately a lot of times they can't. Your kids can really dance!
When I look back at my 10 years of dancing, the most prominent memories I have are of my JCD team. To me this team represents not only an amazing group of dancers but also some of the best people I know. Especially in my high school years, the studio and the team provided an environment where I could go to forget the stresses of everyday life, and no matter what kind of mood I was in, going to dance for even an hour or so would always brighten up my day. Between the seemingly endless stories, birthday parties, or some of most hilarious poems I've ever heard, I always have something to look forward to at dance. When competition season rolls around everyone is so supportive of one another. It's an amazing feeling to know that no matter how you place at the competition there is always the team of 40 friends there to share that feeling with you and support you regardless of what happens. With all the time that we spend together in classes, rehearsals, and competitions it's no wonder that I've found some of my best friends in the team. Even though the JCD's are a very successful competitive dance team, I know that what matters most are the experiences and friends that are made along the way. Even now, looking back on my 5 years as a CD I honestly cannot recall which dances got what awards, but I do remember so many amazing moments. It's because of all of these memories that I feel so honored to have been part of such a great team.
Graduate of Lake Brantley HS & the JCD Team program
I'm glad I was a JCD because it has shaped me into the type of person I am today. By having the privilege to pursue my hobby and talent, dance has helped me to learn the discipline and motivation which helps me in my college career. Being a JCD not only taught me individual qualities, but taught me how to work together in a team. Practicing dances for competition is the equivalent to studying for a college degree, and taught me how to set long term as well as short term goals. Jen was my motivator. Just as an advisor in college helps you through your problems and guides you on the right track, Jen advised me how to become the person I wanted to be. Overall, I don't believe I was a dancer who became a JCD, I believe I was a JCD who became a dancer. A JCD means much more than performing well. It means doing well, in dance and everyday. Perhaps that is why I was on the dean's list at the University of Central Florida every semester!

I just wanted to thank Colby for such a great experience. I can't remember anything in recent years that I've been as nervous about as getting that bun done right and getting her to you on time! smile emoticon But we did it, and everyone looked great, so I consider it a win! I was so impressed with the team and the dances in general. Loved the variety from our team, costumes, ideas, etc. In the end that was so much more enjoyable and impressive to me. You are extremely talented and dedicated and we are lucky to have our daughter learning from you. We know she's loving it when we pick her up after little sleep due to excitement and then a 13 hour day and she's happy and wanting to do it again. Thank you!

My daughter, Andrea, danced with the JCD's for 9 years and I will always view it as one of the best things that ever happened to her. I credit her time working with Jennifer and the team with so many of the life lessons and self-confidence that served her well through-out college and on into her career. The demands of her time & missing out on occasional events was a minor part of the experiences, due to the commitment she felt towards her teammates and teachers. She learned that following the rules & working hard brought her the results she wanted to achieve...today she can apply the same strategies to her work and earn the respect & success she wants in her workplace. After Andrea graduated & moved away, I have had the opportunity to work with/for Jennifer & the Colby dancers creating some of their costumes...the times I have been in the studio for fittings, etc. I am repeatedly impressed by the girls...they are always so appreciative for the costumes and...so polite...so excited to be working on their dances! I can not think of a better environment for kids to develop into young adults...I would recommend this dance studio to anyone looking for a fun, supportive place to develop great dance technique, performance experience & friendships.

I spent some of my most formative years at this studio and I know how truly hard working and committed the Colby family is to this legendary local institution. I am now a professional dancer on the National Tour of the Lion King and am so thankful for my experiences I had with Colby Center for dance and Jen. I have fond memories of traveling for competition, rehearsals and performances that I will never forget.

From a dance Grandfather:
You know what I like? I like the team spirit and I like the fact you insist on some darn discipline!
Thank you for believing in my daughter. She is really enjoying working with you. We are so grateful for the opportunity for her to dance with such an outstanding team. With all the hours we put into dance, we know you do so many more. This family will always be there to support you.
What a great job at competition ... the choreography was awesome, the dancers were awesome, and the team spirit was so wonderful to watch. And I want to tell you again how much I appreciate that all of the Colby dances and costumes are age appropriate. That alone makes me really happy to have my daughter dancing at your studio.
At Nationals in New York City, I started noticing so many things I've heard you say all year long ... Your attention to detail is much appreciated AND noticed by others as that "Special Award for Good Grooming for ALL Dances" proves!
I wanted to write to you and tell you how impressed I was with the entire bus trip to Panama City weekend! The kids all danced so great and it was a lot of fun to watch! As always, I was proud of our kids and the age-appropriate dances they performed. Not only are our dances and costumes age appropriate, but you really have the knack for picking great music! All of the music (especially the solos) seem so well suited for each child. The music never overpowered the dancer; the dancer and the music always seemed to fit together perfectly. The one thing that I was really impressed with was the responsibility level of the dancers. I was in awe of them, especially on Sunday morning. I know that many of them did not have their parents with them, yet they all were packed, dressed, make up done, eaten breakfast and on the bus at 7:30 a.m. Being a mom, I can't tell you how great it is to see such a dedication and sense of responsibility. It's such a great characteristic for all people/children to have. Thanks for being so well organized and prepared. It really showed this weekend!
• My friends and I are all dancers with the Colby Center for Dance and it’s a huge part of our life. I spend most of my time with these girls even though we don’t go to the same school or church or live in the same neighborhood. We are not just dance partners, we are teammates and we are friends.
• Dance has helped me become more coordinated and graceful ... with the exceptions of those times I trip over my own two feet.
• I wouldn’t have the good grades I have now if it weren’t for dance. It keeps me reaching for higher levels, it gives me focus, concentration, and discipline ...
• I have learned through dance that the saying “practice makes perfect” really is true.
• Dance has also made a difference in the way I feel about myself. I used to feel uncomfortable getting up in front of people to give a presentation, but now I don’t. Dance has given me a lot of self-confidence. It feels wonderful to know I found something I am good at.
• Learning that making mistakes is ok as long as you tried your best is really important. Later on, another door and another opportunity will open.
• I have learned that to reach a goal, I have to work very hard and never give up.
• I believe that if I did not dance, I would spend most of my time sitting around the house ... Dance allows me to keep my body in shape while doing something that I love.
• Dance teaches me about commitment and hard work. The Friday night sleepovers, the groovy school dances, and the birthday parties sometimes have to be put aside. But when I can finally do a new combination after weeks of trying, it is worth it.
• Dance has taught me to be a good teammate and a good competitor. Being a good teammate means being positive and supportive of everyone on my team. I am also learning to be a good competitor. It is fun to meet dancers from the studios we compete against. Being nice to everyone really gets you far.
• Dance has given me confidence in myself. I remember when I was three at my very first recital, waiting backstage and so nervous I was about to cry ... but as soon as I got on stage, I gave my biggest smile and started to dance. From that moment I knew I loved to dance!
• I have a place in dance, and that’s important to me. It makes a difference in my life just knowing that after a day of tests, school gossip and nagging parents, I can step in the studio and do something that truly makes me happy.
• Dance has taught be how important it is to be on time. It is unfair to keep my teammates and my teachers waiting. Dance has also taught me to stay organized and to balance my time.
When I’m on stage dancing or just practicing in the studio, I feel like I’m where I’m meant to be and that I’m important, feelings I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.
• Last year was a hard one for me and my family and I had so many thoughts going through my head all the time. None of them know it, but everyday my dance teammates and teachers helped me along by being so positive and so supportive, even when they didn’t know what was going on. They are so nice to everyone, and I hope they realize how much they mean to me.
• Our instructor Jennifer Colby and her helpers are some of the most talented people I know ... They teach us to be responsible and to treat others with respect. I want to be like them.
• Dance has allowed me to grow as a person and has been an environment where I can flourish ... It gives me the best friends and role models I could ever find. But most importantly, it has given me happiness ...
• With the help of my teachers, dance has taught me, most of all, to be the best person I can be.
• Most importantly, dance makes me happy. I don’t think I’m ever happier than when I’m in the studio or on the stage.
