Competition dance at a GREAT STUDIO can be a GREAT EXPERIENCE!
The Colby Center's competition team, the JCDs, are a team of GREAT DANCERS THAT COMPETE - NOT A TEAM OF COMPETITION DANCERS. Ever since our beginning in 1997-1998, we have taken high honors at nearly every event we attend, but our team's focus has always been on proper training for long-term goals, with a lower priority placed on the short-term successes of today such as trophies, crowns, and seeking dance-related approval via social media. Our team dancers are well-balanced young artists who excel in tough academic programs and also enjoy plenty of social and family time in conjunction with their dance training!
We are particularly proud that our JCD dancers are recognized statewide and nationally for their professionalism, well-organized approach, preparation, eagerness to learn, excellent grooming and appearance, and openness and friendliness towards other competing studios and dancers. These are all extremely valuable life skills that JCDs learn through our team.
The JCDs do not rest after a winning event, we are always seeking improvement and pushing for the next step in each dancer's training. While we believe that dancers of all ages benefit greatly from participation in the JCDs, we do ensure that those who dance all the way through high school graduation have as many doors open to them upon graduation as possible. Our #1 goal for them is to encourage versatility rather than narrowing their training to just one area of expertise/potential. In the entertainment industry, there is nothing more valuable to a dancer's career than proficiency in, and adaptability for, all styles. Those that train in just one specialty are limited in their career path, and suffer many more career-ending injuries than those who study all forms of dance in their early years.
Our former JCDs have been HUGE successes in the professional world, many in dance, others in alternate fields - but one thing is for sure, the JCD education is memorable and priceless for all dancers involved in our amazing program! Our team members are taught every lesson that a future in dance would require them to have mastered, and our graduates enthusiastically state that these lessons have applied to careers in many fields, not just for those who have become professional dancers. This has lead them to positions on the college dance teams of FSU, UF, UCF, USF and FGCU, professional sports dance teams in four sports, stage productions on three continents, various cruise ship contracts with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, Disney World contracts on three continents, music videos, and more.
While it may not be every dancer's goal to be a part of a competition team, being at a studio where there is such a team, means that the staff and team dancers are being exposed to other sources of choreography, learning good lessons about confidence, improving their staging skills, and developing skills that help tremendously in the professional dance world. This is a benefit to the training of competitive & non-competitive students alike because it raises the depth & training standards at the studio.
On the other hand, if you love dance and think you might want to be a dancer someday, a competition dance team is a great way to prepare. Watch ANY episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars, Dance Life, Glee, any new music videos, or High School Musical, Camp Rock, and the remake of Footloose - you'll see literally DOZENS of former child dance competitors, all of whom gained their stage presence and polish from being a part of competition dance. Even if your young dancer never becomes a professional dancer, competition dance is a wonderful, exciting, and rewarding way to be a part of something magical, memorable & fun as they grow into teenagers and adulthood.
It must be mentioned that "competition dance studios" have recently been negatively stereotyped due to over-the-top "semi-reality" television programming that focuses on the negative and often outrageous antics of a VERY small number of dance studios, and dance and pageant families. The Colby Center is NOT one of those studios! In fact, we were contacted several times by the producers of one of the most famous of those TV shows about participating. They were “blown away” by videos of our dancers and our routines. However, when we told them we were the exact opposite of the bullying and dramatics currently seen on the show, they lost interest in us.
There are outrageous individuals and ideas in EVERY sport and extracurricular activity, but that does not make the activity itself harmful if the RIGHT studios, instructors, and fellow dancers are found! We have a strong reputation for excellence, but just as strong a reputation for professionalism and great attitudes, and that is the reputation we are most proud of! We are PROUD to offer a POSITIVE team environment to "competition dancers”!
Students must be recommended to audition for this program by a studio Staff member. New members will audition on one of the first two Saturdays in May of 2018 from 9-11am. During the audition, one parent must be present representing each dancer, and they will sit in on an orientation/ Q&A session to get all of the necessary information! The team is a commitment, and does have a number of requirements, which we do adhere to throughout the year. These are necessary to keep the level of the team high, and to teach the member dancers about commitment and teamwork. We offer two levels of commitment for our JCD Team dancers - a "Jumpstart" program and an "Elite" program.
Like youth or even professional sports teams, competition dance teams across the country go through cycles. Right now, the majority of our team members are young, very talented, and enthusiastic to grow to maintain the standards of the past 20 years of JCD success. The next few years will be an especially good time to become part of the team! Although new members typically join in the late Spring as explained above, please do not hesitate at any time to ask for more details on our Team, or to inquire about possible placement. Just call or email us!
